CNC Machining Tolerances

FeatureDescription

Maximum Part Size: Milled parts can be as large as 80” x 48” x 24” (2,032 x 1,219 x 610 mm). Lathe parts can reach up to 62” (1,575 mm) in length and 32” (813 mm) in diameter.

Standard Lead Time: 7 business days.

General Tolerances: Tolerances for metals will be maintained within +/- 0.005” (+/- 0.127 mm) in accordance with ISO 2768, unless otherwise specified. Tolerances for plastics and composites will be +/- 0.010”.

Precision Tolerances: Rapid Manufacture can manufacture and inspect to tight tolerances as per your drawing specifications, including GD&T callouts.

Minimum Feature Size: 0.010” (0.254 mm), dependent on part geometry and chosen material.

Threads and Tapped Holes: Rapid Manufacture can accommodate any standard thread size. We also offer the service of machining custom threads. Consequently, these requests will undergo a manual quote review process.

Edge Condition: Sharp edges are broken and deburred by default.

Surface Finish: The standard finish is “as machined”, with a surface finish of 125 Ra or better. Additional finishing options can be specified when obtaining a quote.

What is CNC Machining Service?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Machining is a subtractive manufacturing process that involves using high speed, precision cutting tools to remove material from a blank block. The block is usually made of plastic or metal. The CNC machine carves away material from the block to create the part.

A CNC machine is given a specific set of directions and uses those instructions to cut the part out of a blank. The CNC machine instructions are given in computer code. The code will tell the machine where to place the tooltip, how fast the tooltip should spin, and the coordinates to where the tooltip will move. CNC machines use coordinates on a set axis such as x-, y-, and z-axis. Commonly used CNC machines include vertical milling machines, horizontal milling machines, lathes, routers, and grinders. Parts can be cut out with high precision and easily replicated over and over again. Rapid Manufacture offers a wide array of plastic and metal machining services by offering not only CNC machines for plastic and metal but plastic injection molding services as well.

Surface Finishes for CNC Machining

CNC machining leaves visible tool marks during the process of removing portions of the block’s surface to create desired shapes. If don’t want as-machined parts, select a surface finishing for your custom parts. At Rapid Manufacture, we offer several common surface finishes that help improve functionality and aesthetics.

At Rapid Manufacture, we cover an extensive range of material finishing to achieve the required quality for your products or prototype:

  • Standard (as manufactured)
  • Sanding
  • Bead blasting
  • Anodizing
  • Painting
  • Polishing
  • Plating
  • Electropolishing
  • Brushing
  • Chrome-plating
  • Texturing
